Here are some things that help us as we set forth and conquer, making through this city day after day. Yes, not just surviving but thriving in this beautiful, inspiring, loud and unforgiving city, and making it look easy.

1. Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer. (Approx. $12)

It comes in more than one pallete and works as eyeshadow, blush and bronzer. If I only have room for a few makeup items when traveling, this is the first thins I grab!

2.Maybelline Colossal Lash Mascara (Approx. $8.00)

I am really an advocate of layering mascaras as I am obsessed with it. I think it is the most essential thing when creating your signature makeup style. People will always look at your eyes, they don't call them "the windows to the soul" for nothin'. If you are not into layering and using a different (maybe separating) mascara for the inner eye and a different (volume building mascara for the outer lashes, this is the one for you! It delivers on all of the promises made by Maybelline. It is simply fantastic.

3. Kiehl's Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ (Approx $32.00 lg)

Buy it. Use it. It works. It makes makeup application a breeze and your skin will feel silky smooth all day, Not to mention the fact that you are getting great sun protection, They have really out done themselves this time!

4. Roasting Plant Coffee

I frequent the Lower East Side location (pictured below) but the Greenwich Village location serves up the same wonderful coffee. The baked goods are super yummy as well. I can go on and on about this place but I won't. Check it out for yourself. It's not exactly cheap but in this case you get what you pay for and if you put money on one of their pre-pay cards, you get a discount on each purchase.

5. Anystop MTA for Android

It is easy to set up and the train/bus arrival times are very accurate. This is a lifesaver when you are they type of person who pushes it to the very last minute, who thinks you can make it anywhere in the city in 20 minutes (like I used to until I developed a severe case of chronic lateness). Give yourself adequate time to make it to your destination and use this app to time your arrival at the train station or bus stop. It will make your life much easier.

On April 28th at 7pm, 550 luminaries in business, entertainment, the arts, and social entrepreneurship will gather at Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street, NYC to celebrate the 10- year anniversary of Ubuntu Education Fund, a non-profit organization created to give the people of Port Elizabeth, South Africa the means to improve their own community. The Ubuntu gala will feature a live performance by legendary South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, accompanied by special guest Paul Simon. Actor Kevin Bacon will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, with fellow actor / activist, Alan Cumming, as auctioneer.

Benefit host committee members; Donna Karan, Vikram Chatwal, Andie MacDowell, Kyra Sedgwick, Timothy White, Mark Seliger, and Business leaders; Ed Ludwig (BD), Vincent Mai (AEA Investors LP), and Dan Battsek (Miramax) will be in attendance to show their support.

I don't know about you but the little sound bites in the current Swiffer WetJet commercials are not enough for me. I can't stand commercials and since I never watch anything in real time, I usually fast forward through the commercial breaks thanks to my DVR (love it so much). However, I saw the WetJet spot one day and wanted to hear more of the song.

I immediately thought it was Hall & Oates because it is so reminiscent of their hit, "She's Gone," but "Baby Come Back" was recorded by a group called Player in 1977. The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. It was the the only #1 hit of their career putting the group on the eternal list of "one hit wonders". The song has been used in movies and TV shows and was sampled numerous times by recording artists including Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical).

Good work guys. Sometimes one hit is all you need!

Patrik attended Brandeis University in Massachusetts and received his undergraduate degree in film and theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Who: The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center was formed in 1996 as a non-profit organization designed to advocate, educate, research, develop and preserve the history, as well as the future of Blacks in film and television. The BHERC produces, organizes and funds diverse cultural art, film and theater projects in order to capitalize on our rich foundation established in Hollywood. We not only promote more African Americans as artists, but also have begun a "New Era" in the documentation of African American images.

this post was inspired by a recent terrible experience at 'nasty' vinyl in chelsea. i stood at the bar trying to get a drink for 10 minutes while both the bartender and bar back looked through me as if i was a 5ft, 4in piece of glass. well honeys, trixie doesn't blend in with the walls, not by any means. you won't find me there again, ever! The place iS off my list!!

Happy Hour is supposed to be fun, a no stress situation that leaves you HAPPY damn it!

When is the right time to dress up in the city?

I am "that girl" who lives for a reason to dress up. i buy dresses and shoes all of the time while envisioning the perfect setting in which their beauty will be maximized.

Fast forward to what i think is the perfect occasion and everyone is wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Does it make me feel uncomfortable? do i really care what other people are wearing when i am so blissfully happy in my super cutesy or dangerously sexy outfit? UHH NO!

However, it does make me think. when did it become cool in New York City to wear the same outfit for every occasion? when did we cease to be the trend setters, the urban fashion experts that people the world over try to emulate? Is this "dress down" attitude the next wave in fashion and am i just to slow to see it for what it is... genius?

Either way, call me Carrie but I will never stop shopping for the perfect outfits and i won't let them grow old and dated siting in my closet because i am afraid of what the "cool dressed down kids" will think of me.

Alternative- K-os- "sunday morning". This pick was certainly a tough one to classify because this Toronto-based artist is generally considered to be a rapper. He started out in the mid nineties doing underground hip-hop with a raw, kinda grimy, old-school edge, but over the years, he gradually blossomed into a versatile artist/musician. I like to describe his style as, "Outkast meets Gnarles Barkley", like Ceelo, he can sing and rap at any given time, and like Outkast he has very obscure and eclectic beats on his albums. He has made a name for himself in Canada but is relatively unknown in the U.S. He only had one single that he burst on the scene with five years ago which was his ode to breakdancing, "supastar", which basically went overlooked. But now he is back with his third set, "Atlantis", and doesn't fail to intrigue music lovers, he's constantly switching up and playing with different styles of music. From raw, old-school hip-hop with his grimy-elemental beats and lyrics to rock and electronic, this dude can do it all. This record in-particular has a ska-rock feel to it, and his vocals are edgy and off-kilter, but is also funky with swing music undertones. K-os is definately a good listen if you want to hear something out of the norm.

R&B- Sleepy Brown- "'til', (your legs start shakin')". Sleepy Brown is one those artists who has never been looked at seriously because, he was just perceived as the "Nate Dogg", of the Dungeon family who could never make it on his own. His laid back falsetto, and pimped-out, 70's era, "Willie Dynamite", style has made people skeptical of his true talent and wrote him off as a gimic. But that is far from the truth as he exibits on his debut album full of laid back funky tracks, and stellar songwriting. As one-third of the legendary production team, Organized noize, Sleepy has mad beatmaking and songwriting skills as he proved back in 1994 when he co-wrote TLC's big hit, "waterfalls". The second single from his album, "Mr. Brown", Sleepy gives us a taste of his southern funk as he serenades a young lady over a mid-tempo, melodic backdrop. Sleepy Brown has definately proven with his debut, that he should be looked at as a real artist and a big addition to R&B music.

Hip-hop- Nas- "Hip-hop is dead". The God's Son is finally back with a new single and album of the same title, "Hip-hop is dead". His first effort under his new label, (Def Jam), and new boss/friend, (Jay-Z). Known for his thought provoking, original concepts and superior lyrical dexterity, Nas has never had a problem with putting out quality material as far as lyricism is concerned. Now musically, its a completely different story. His whole career, (especially since his 2nd album, "it was written"), he's had mixed reviews about the production quality on his albums. This song shows no evidence of anything different. His love for Hip-hop and his disdain for its current state is obvious, over will.i.am's sample heavy backdrop, which was previously used back on his 2004 single, "thief's theme". This beat just sounds boring and redundant. But that fact is quickly overlooked as Nas spits tenaciously over it, making it sound more like a raw, mixtape joint rather than a single from his album. Overall, its definately a good record and a breath of fresh air from everything else in mainstream urban music.

"Whack joint of the month"- Chingy- "dem jeans"- I could've picked a few songs to write about this month, but i chose this one, not just to pick on Chingy, but to challenge every artist who feels compelled to make these type of records. C'mon folks, where is the creativity? This song has a trite, overused concept, that is older than most of its listeners. On top of that, the beat leaves as much to be desired as Chingy's lyrics and J.D.'s hook. Neither one of them are lyrical specialists, but even the most mediocre rapper can do better. There is nothing that I can say positive about this record because, nothing about it is original, (including the video, eventhough, the girls looked nice. "ha ha"), it doesn't entertain even in the least bit. Just a blatent attempt at urban mainstream radio, but low in quality, Chingy, step it up, homie!!

New Music Reviews December 4 - December 10!

R&B- Nelly Furtado- "say it right"- Nelly and Timbo do it again with this funky 3rd single from her Timbaland-assisted album, "loose". Hoping to capture the success of her first single, "promiscuous", Nelly tries to stick to the script, but slightly change up her vocals. Basically, she's just riding the beat with a monotone, melancholy style that makes it unclear for us to fathom this song's concept. But with Tim's rich and thick backdrop, equipped with hard-thumping drums, and eerie, melodic sounds and voices, you'll find yourself spellbound with the beat, and not listening for the lyrics. Despite this records frustratingly ambiguous nature, its a very entertaining song.

Alternative- Gwen Stefani- "wind it up"- This record is just all over the place. This is signature, Gwen Stefani with her squeaky voice and meaningless babbling. Love her or hate her, she comes original every time and this track is no different with weird horns and synthesizers, and funky drums, this beat is a head-nodder. Like Nelly Furtado's song, no real substance just for pure entertainment, this is just a good record.

Hip-hop- Busta Rhymes ft. Q-Tip- "you can't hold the torch"- This record gives me the nostalgic feeling of the 90's era hip-hop scene when Leaders of the new school and A tribe called Quest was doing it big together. Busta and Q-tip are bussin' on here about their relevance in the game, over a laid-back, jazz-hop backdrop, provided by the late, great J-Dilla. They are basically saying that they still have an obligation to hip-hop and can't quit until these new rappers learn how to make good music. Unfortunately, the realism in this record is on point. Everybody who claim to be part of hip-hop should be required to hear this record. Maybe we can all realize that our standards for what's good is too low and other people will change their outlook and have more respect for the culture.

Special- DVD of the month- "Idlewild"- This is simply a shout-out on behalf of my sister, (Thatgirl006), to tell you folks to check out the movie, "Idlewild" which is in stores, Tuesday, Dec. 5th, 2006. This movie is a clever musical from the very different minds of Andre' and Big Boi of Outkast. Its about two friends who are also quite different in the early 20th century who are dealing with the trials and tribulations of life, both turn to music as an escape thru an edgy, black night club. With great music and greater dancing, "Idlewild" is definitely a good look to check out.

R&B

Rihanna- "we ride". It took me a minute because r&b is so saturated nowadays that i don't really like a lot of it. but i chose this song because it is what it is. No intricate concepts to decipher, so sad love song, just a record about cruisin' with your significant other, chillin' in the ride. And whatever Rihanna lacks in star quality or vocal ability, the hard, funky, mid-tempo track makes up for it. Very enjoyable and has an infectious vibe, you can just hop in your whip, turn it on and just ride like the song says.

Alternative

Red Hot Chili Peppers- "snow (hey)". R.H.C.P. is definitely my favorite rock band of all time. Their brand of funk, metal and hip-hop fused together made a mark on the industry forever. They have already established longevity in the game because they adapt to the times and can still make good music. This song reflects that as well as their latest double LP, "stadium arcadium". This record displays their complex musicianship as well as Anthony Kiedis' wide-range voice. This band just won't go away until they decide to gracefully bow out.

Hip-hop

Snoop Dogg ft. R. Kelly- "That's that". This record is a sure-fire hit, hate it or love it. Snoop is a world-wide star for a reason, he knows how to make good music to groove to and he proves it time and time again. With a very funky, laid back track, Snoop rides it effortlessly with his signature G-funk swagger. And with Kelly doing what he does best on the hook, this song's format is basically flawless. This is definitely another joint to ride, the only thing wrong was that Snoop released this at the wrong time. This should have been a summer banger.

Whack joint of the month-

Fergie- "fergalicious". Being a fairly talented vocalist in her own right, Black Eyed Peas singer, Fergie, seemed like that missing link that kept B.E.P. from locking down the game a long time ago. But with her solo debut, she missed completely by putting out sub-par material. Her first two singles, for instance, abandoning her silky vocal skills that she's known for, for corny non-inspired raps. She sounds more like she is trying to mock hip-hop music, than just pay homage to it. "Fergalicious", is a horrible attempt at trying to remake J.J. Fad's, "supersonic". The beat is flat, and she is absolutely babbling over it with whack, subject matter-less rhymes. My advice is that she needs to stick with what she knows. Keep singing, sweetie, you'll last longer.

Best/worst albums of the month. Producer/artists albums.

Best

J. Dilla- "The shining". This is the last set of recorded material by my fellow Detroit native whose untimely demise earlier this year, took its toll on the hip-hop community in general, not to mention Detroit's. An album full of obscure chops and eerie, funky samples set the backdrop for Dilla and friends (some of hip-hop's best underrated mc's). This album proves him as one of the most elite producers to grace the game, and his presence will be felt forever.

Worst

Pharrell- "In my mind". For almost ten years, Pharrell and his silent partner-n-crime, Chad Hugo have burst on the scene with their heavy metallic drums and sonic-melodic, funky backdrops. We could not get enough of the Neptune's production. They were the most sought after boards-men by every kind of artist for years to come. But something happened, Pharrell started to achieve success as an artist himself and the more commercial he became, the more their signature sound that everybody couldn't get enough of, started to descend and water-down, beginning to sound like everything else. As a result, you now have, " in my mind". Lacking direction and melodic funk courtesy of his partner Chad, Pharrell's beats are bland and redundant. Unlike the previous N.E.R.D. projects that was eccentric and experimental, that is just a Pharrell album with radio friendly songs. He's never been a great lyricist or singer, but at least he could depend on his music talents to get him by. But with this disc, nothing is substantial, any of these songs are easily forgettable. Next time, P needs Chad there, so his disc can sound more complete.

Producer of the month

Polow da Don- Former member of the ATL rap group, Jim Crow, Polow has a name for himself as a premier boards-man in the industry. With hits for Ciara, Field Mob, Fergie, and Rich Boy under his belt, this dude is, "rockin' wit' da best". With no one track sounding like another, this guy can give you something new every time. Look for nothing but hits in the future from this man.

Underground star

Big Black Lincoln- "Heaven's caught on fire". This Toronto based, collaboration of the city's best artists and producer/dj's is an instant underground classic. Led by the more known, Sauerkraut, (who is also Nelly Furtado's background singer on the road), is a talented lyricist and also has decent vocal abilities. The album is a melting pot of funk and electronic music with west coast hip-hop undertones. With r&b vocals over these funky backdrops, this album is in a class of its own. Very entertaining, they are showing us that T.dot (Toronto, Canada), is not playing, they want to be respected as great artists and won't stop until they are on the map with the rest.

Any serious party person knows how hard it is to get a weekly going and how hard it is to keep it alive. this is a really great space, a party promoted and created by dancers, for dancers and house heads. the vibe is warm and inviting and the music will make you want to break your back! we want this party to withstand the test of time so come out! we all need to attend the party this sunday and buy at least one drink (even if it is just water or soda). the admission is half price (just $5.00) so spend the other half at the bar or the owners may shut it down!

R&B- Robin Thicke-

"lost without you". Thicke is the under populated category of "blue eyed soul." a category that can be good or cheesy depending on the artist. Lucky for Thicke, he is not considered cheesy. He has manufactured a soulful and eccentric new sound that distinguishes him from the rest (even though some may say that his voice is too similar to Justin Timberlake's popular falsetto). On this song he proves himself with with tracks featuring smoothed-out acoustic guitar and soft drums, it goes well with his seamless tenor. Overall this track is definitely a good look for R&B music.

Hip-hop- The Game-

"One blood (all-star remix) featuring. Various artists". Listen up, folks, I know that ya'll think I'm biased because I just reviewed Game a couple of weeks ago, but once you hear this, you're opinion will change. This was a good look for him to do just before the BET awards, considering that he has just about the whole cast on this one track!!! Its a one song compilation clocking in over twelve minutes, it has every hip-hop heavyweight on this track and he even brought a couple of past heavy hitters out of hiatus, (Ja Rule and Nore). Very entertaining, even if ur not a fan of the original "one blood," u'll like this remix.

Alternative-

Hinder-

"lips of an angel". This record is reminiscent of the 80's era heavy metal power ballad. It has an emotional vibe with the lead's powerful and melancholy vocals crooning about his infatuation with another woman. With his strong voice, and an strong concept, this definitely makes for an interesting song.

R&B-
John Legend- heaven. john legend is a talented musician without a doubt, destined 4 stardom right when he arrived on the scene. his overall sound is a breath of fresh air in a industry full of monotony. the send single from Once Again is no different. with kanye's muffled drums. john's piano and guitar riffs, the music funky, while the lyrics and vocal delivery give you that gospel feel. this song is definitely a hit.

Alternative-
Evanescence- call me when your sober. this record is a paradox. oddly, amy lee's silky vocals go well with the bands hard, industrial sound. Her voice carries the whole song suprisingly and gives it a smoother feel then the average rock song. I still see this as a "goth-head's" favorite. nonetheless, its a tight song.

Hip-Hop-
Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott- daydreamin. This song is a good combination of traditional jazz and old school hip hop. Very creative but also risky. a song like this is non-conventional in mainstream rap, so its acceptance is not guaranteed. that might be why a record like this is so ingenious, it goes against the grain. Lupe's status as a great artist is imminent.

trixie and trina...we've done it again! just for you (our fabulous readers) we've hired a talented young music specialist. he will be giving us weekly reviews and suggestions. be sure to check in every Monday to read up!

these are my picks for this week, November 6-12, 2006:

Hip hop-
The Game- Lets ride (strip club). The Game is my favorite mainstream artist. He has affectively combined early 90's west coast gangsta rap with early 90's east coast lyricism. This song is perfect for the radio with Dr. Dre's g-funk sound.

R&B-
Ciara- Promise. This song has grown on me. The production quality is stellar, almost like some earlier Prince type stuff. This will be a hit for her cuz its a different vibe from her usual stuff. The only thing negative is that she is recycling that old Janet Jackson/Velvet rope sensual vocal style and it doesn't mesh well with that bangin' beat. But over all this song is tight.

Alternative-
Incubus- Anna molly- incubus is one of those groups that is mainstream but has an underground appeal. they always push the envelope with every new album and this new one is no different. Its fresh, its a new style and its upbeat. the drums are deep like a hip hop beat and the flailing guitars are funky. Dope song.

maybe it's culture shock but everytime i come to LA i wake up no later than 8am and am in the bed soundly sleeping before 12am.

needless to say, things are very different ladies and gentlemen. there is no dizzying swirl of traffic constantly buzzing, no crazy taxi drivers to hail when leaving a bar, the sun is almost always shining and no one walks anywhere. that's just the tip of the iceberg. i honestly don't know what to do with myself here and am not really motivated to do much of anything. everyone smiles and says hello, thank you and please. that's refreshing. but i don't feel the same sense of community that i feel in NY.

as one who has been contemplating leaving the muck and mire of NYC behind, buying a car and driving out of my driveway, attached to a spacious apartment drenched in sunlight (for less than 1.5 million that is)...i don't know. LA seems like the natural move for someone who loves night life, makes a living by coordinating fabulous events and bringing fabulous people together but as of right now...not so much. if the event's not attached to a big studio film or tv show will people attend? do we even share social sensibilities?

what is a new yorker to do when she needs a break from the manic pace of our city, not to mention the subways, tourists and hustlers on every corner? i thought i could escape to the city of angels...now i am not so sure.

and after all of that...i got on the train...two men standing in the doorway blocking the entrance two other young gentlemen walk on in front of me and stop after clearing the door, i push my way through them all frustrated to find that the car had plenty of room and THEN...a nice, older gentleman OFFERED ME HIS SEAT! i declined as i was only going one stop but the beauty and sincerity of the moment stayed with me throughout the day.

a bit of kindness can change the way you see the world.

by train: Take the A train to 190th Street. Take the elevator to Fort Washington Avenue. After Exiting the subway station, walk to the right along fort Washington Avenue towards the traffic circle.

The Entrance to Fort Tryon Park is between two columns on the opposite end of the traffic circle. Enter the park and take the first path to your right, which will lead you to the entrance of the restaurant. The walk from the subway station to the entrance of the restaurant will be just under 5 minutes.

You can switch to the A train from the 1 or the 9 trains at 168th street.

By bus: Take the M4 to 190th street and follow the directions above to the entrance of Fort Tryon Park.

By car: Take the West Side Highway, which turns into the Henry Hudson Parkway, to two exits past the George Washington Bridge. The exit is on the right hand side and is a large green sign that reads "Fort Tryon Park". This road will take you to the café: follow the road up the hill, around and past the Cloisters Museum, and bear to the right at the fork in the road onto Margaret Corbin Drive. From the Parkway to the Fork is about 0.4 miles. From the fork in the road to the café is about 0.7 miles. We are the 2-story stone building with a pitched slate roof. The parking lot is behind the building and across the street. There is much additional parking back at the Cloisters museum if the lot at the Café is full.

is it really worth it to live in NY?

i had the absolute worst commute last night! it was flippin' hot as hell and the AC was out in many cars on both the A and L trains. the platforms were ridiculously crowded waiting for both trains. of course, everyone pushed into the train because they didn't want to wait another 1/2 hr for the next one to arrive. on one hand i can understand that, on the other it angers me.

why do we have this fear that another train will never come? why do people push each other down to get a seat? why do people look at pregnant women, men holding infants and elderly people and not offer them a seat? is it part of our culture to be so selfish and without respect or reverence for the circle of life? i think yes! i think that this has gotten even worse with the introduction of ipods, PDAs, Intouch, US weekly and all of the other things we obsess over. we are so in our own little worlds that we are not aware of things going on right around us.

after suffering through a miserable one hour plus commute (that usually takes 20 min-1/2 hour) i asked myself, are people living like this anywhere else? is it worth it to arrive at your apartment wilted and feeling sick due to lack of sufficient air to live in this city? the trains are overcrowded not to mention the constant service suspension, housing is a joke! Tourists are taking over and we are paying more and more for less and less quality of life. as the days turn in to weeks and months of this, i'm starting to think...not so much!

This question comes at a good time since the new york magazine cover story for this week tackles many nyc etiquette issues. i wonder who started this trend but for the record my friends: it is not sexy, it does not bring you any closer to getting a record deal, it is annoying and most importantly, you look and sound crazy.

ok. i hope that clears up some things for my dashing young urban gentlemen. you will get more of the attention you want simply by offering your seat to a woman on the train and/or looking us in the face and smiling now and again. after all, these days it is getting harder to tell who's who and what's what in nyc!

Why does spring make us feel restless?

i am feeling like i need to make some big changes in my life and i am wondering whether it is the change of season or the change in trixie.

it is very rare in NY that we have such a typical spring. warm days cool nights and a sense of calm anticipation in the air. it feels good but being the true new yorker that i am, i wonder if it's the calm before the storm or truly a nice calm spring in the city that never sleeps.

I know many of these dancers personally and i think it will be more than the price of admission. it is so refreshing to see people expressing themselves artistically with passion. most of these artists do it because they love it and it's that simple. these days that's hard to find.

valerie is from the bay area and received her masters in vocal performance from the new school a few years ago. a versatile musician with a strong jazz sensibility. she has earth mother energy with lots of urban fire. in short, she's making music her way, and it works!

why would you not introduce people?

why wouldn't you introduce a friend to other friends in a social setting?

last night i went to meet a dear friend and was surprised to find that he was with other friends of mine. i didn't think they knew each other as they are people i know from totally different areas of my life. the mutual friend (and i use the term loosely) happens to know everyone. now, this is where it gets strange; the mutual friend is roommates with my dear friend and is pretty friendly with the other friends (let's call them the sharks) because he worked with a core member of the group. the core member of the sharks was not at this social gathering.

i was not expecting to see the sharks and was very pleasantly surprised to see them and greeted them all warmly. since they all walked up together, i assumed that they had been introduced and was sort of pleased to see these two worlds converging.

as i walked away with the dear friend that i had planned to meet, he asked me the question that really stumped me for a second. "let me ask you, your part of the (shark) culture, how could i have spent all of that time with them and not have been introduced to one person?" well, i was shocked!! what??!! you came here with (mutual friend)!! he didn't introduce you? "no" he replied.

wow!!

ok, you go to an event with your roommate. you run into people that your roommate doesn't know. you talk to them, you sit with them. you leave the event with them. you don't even introduce your roommate to one of them.

humm...

ok, you go to an event with some of your friends, you run into a friend of one of your friends. he is with someone you have never met. you talk to them, you sit with them, you leave the event with them. you never introduce yourself to the person you don't know. you never acknowledge him.

what??!!

have we gone mad? i am sure we all know better!

a hint for those of you out there who don't get it: just because you ignore a person it doesn't mean they aren't there. if a person you know is rude and doesn't have the social grace to make introductions, introduce yourself. not acknowledging someone's presence is extremely rude.

if a person brings someone to a gathering that he/she doesn't want to introduce, it's not your problem. make the person feel welcome. a simple hello goes farther than we think.

when people say you look good do they mean you look good for you (compared to the way you usually look) or you look good in a universal sense?

don't you sometimes wonder? i see people at the gym in these hideous outfits and i think, 'someone must have told them they look good in that.' i know you know what i mean. like the person was a bit over weight and they lost a few pounds and everyone around them noticed and told them that 'they looked good' or even 'great!' that's nice and supportive. everything a friend should be. BUT what does that mean in the universal sense of looking good? are the words intended to keep them on the path to universal good-lookingness or to tell them that they've made it?

this is very perplexing.

i often wonder as i'm getting dressed, 'do i even know what i look like anymore? should i REALLY be leaving my house looking like this? do i look good or good-and-crazy?' don't worry, i don't really care if i do look crazy as long as i feel good in my clothes. i take risks when getting dressed to say the least and for some reason it works for me. i don't really like to walk around scantily clad anyway. but for those who are living for the thought of summer and can't wait to 'take it all off', i worry.

when asking the age-old question, 'do i look fat in this?', remember a friend never wants to hurt you. we all have at least one person in our lives who is frank enough to tell us the truth even if it sounds harsh. ask THAT friend when contemplating getting into that speedo, half-top, pair of tights.

the truth hurts but hey, don't you really want to know? looks certainly aren't everything but the more comfortable and confident we feel the better we look!

who decided who 'the masters' are?

i have always wondered who the people were that made this decision because i often disagree. monday night i went to see a dance concert at NYU. the graduate and undergraduate dance students had their end of semester concert at tish. There were works by grad students and guest choreographers. there were also works by the 'modern dance masters.' these are the dance makers who have companies and schools. schools that are flourishing. that have never been in danger of folding due to lack of money. these are the people that don't have to pitch stories to the new york times with every ounce of creativity available to them. it is newsworthy that they are doing a season. of course the press will write about it. is there ever a negative review?? rarely. even that's ok because then we are presented with an opportunity to have stimulating discourse about the work.

i find their works painfully dull and self-important. i do not enjoy it. i don't see them taking the risks that younger 'emerging' choreographers are taking. i don't see them thinking about the dancers. Investing in their growth. in short, i just don't see it.

what does that say about me? who are the people that have decided that these are the people who will receive financial support and unending praise from the media? maybe we have different needs. mine are not being met by these so-called 'masters' and for that i will not apologize. it may be uncool to admit it but coolness isn't everything now is it?

one day last week, i was going into the city for a meeting. without any warning, there was no L train in either direction. at 4:00pm in the afternoon! are they kidding me??? and we accept this? that is one of the only sucky things about living in williamsburg. (there is the snotty hipster attitude thing. another day when i have more energy.) we need to do something about this L train situation.

and people think the G train is bad!

i have filed a formal complaint with the MTA. your suggestions regarding further action are welcome.

An expansion of his historic autobiographical solo Good Boy, Alain Buffard's Mauvais Genre is a work about the fragility and vulnerability of the body. Despite assaults from AIDS, aging, etc., there is a sense of conquering, a sense of surviving, that is ultimately joyful. With little concern for the traditional meaning of dance, the choreography leans towards moving images and becomes an installation of bodies; bathed in stark white neon light, on a stage void of music or sets, approximately fifteen individuals stand, motionless and naked. Different genders, genres, and personalities interpreting the movement present themselves as more than a random collection of idiosyncrasies; instead themes of community and the desire to find common ground emerge as each dancer brings his or her own history to the work. Part of FUSED (French-US Exchange in Dance), a four-year partnership fostering dialogue and exchange between dance professionals from the United States and France, the work features Buffard, Matthieu Doze, Jennifer Lacey, and New York-based artists Cedric Andrieux, Erin Cornell, DD Dorvillier, Neil Greenberg, Miguel Gutierrez, Trajal Harrell, John Jasperse, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Heather Kravas, Lucy Sexton, and Jeremy Wade.
